If you love the internet as much as I do, then you’re always looking for the next best experience to try out! This week I have one of the best mass email marketing solutions out there. I never knew how useful this service would be until well, I used it.
A little background and shameless self promotion for why I used this service in the first place: I am creating a documentary with my cousin Hunter about the effects heroin has on communities around the country. For this documentary we used Indiegogo to raise money and needed to be in contact with all of the people who helped fund our project. I wasn’t exactly sure how to go about this at the time. I thought that I would just use indiegogo’s update system, which is fine, but it didn’t give us the in depth options we were looking for.

At that point, I remembered hearing about an email service in commercial on the podcast Start Up. It turns out that the co-founder of Gilmet the production company that created the podcast, created a email service called MailChimp. So I headed over to MailChimp website and got started.
What makes the service interesting is that it finds a great balance of being easy enough for anyone to use but it also allows those with more refined creation skills to get the results they want. I was extremely happy with the results I got. Not only do you have tons of options in the design of the email but they give you a ton of features when it comes to your mailing list and sending options. The emails send from the address of your choosing so there’s less chance of the message ending up in your recipients spam folder. From there, you create the look of your message. You can do this using their formating tools or by uploading your own images. I usually create my images with a program outside of MailChimp and then bring them into the template. Another great feature, is that all of the images you upload stay on their server so you can always add them to an email without having to worry about re-uploading the file every single time. One final super nerdy feature that I love is that they provide you with the ability to access and change the code that the email is built from. I have used this feature to place the email template into a webpage for my site. This way people can access the information from the email without actually receiving the email. I will provide an example of this linked here.
The service itself is free up to certain parameters. If you have 2000 subscribers or more you will have to pay to use MailChimp but just starting up with 2000 subscribers probably isn’t going to be something you have to worry about. You really cannot beat what this service gives you for no cost.
Overall, MailChimp is one of the simplest and most effective ways to send email. Whether you are a small business or an artist looking to get your next project noticed, email is one of the best tools we have to get in contact with your peers. Having the ability to create a visually appealing email as well as powerful tools that help you send the email itself is the perfect combination for success.
Until next week! Stay in the know!
